8 places to get free music

kusBlog, Creative Commons, News

We’ve been asked, where good places are to get free and legal Creative Commons licensed music. Here are our recommendations.

sonicsquirrel delivers lots of electronic netlabel music. Daily approximately 15’000 tracks are downloaded. Everything is Creative Commons licensed.

freemusicarchive.org is more diverse. The music ranges from indie rock to electronic.

Netlabels at archive.org. It’s slow, very slow, you hardly can stream music, but its a good resource for all netlabel releases. Unfortunately most of the sound is experimental.

ccmixter.org is a community music site that promotes remix culture and makes samples, remixes, and a cappella tracks licensed under Creative Commons available for download and re-use in creative works.

SoundShiva is a collection of links to netlabels and netlabel releases.

Scene.org has a huge collection of netlabel releases, unfortunately not sorted by genre. A simple file dump.

ArtistServer is a social music site with a focus on independent artists and bands. Over 9000 mp3 files are waiting for you, in the range from All rights reserved to Creative Commons licnesed.

Dogmazic is a french artists community with already 170’000’000 downloads and listens since 2005. And they don’t stop to grow. Learn french.

…and last but no least: Subscribe to our free music podcast.
